What makes a Mewa industrial wipe so special?

Mewa industrial wipes

At first glance it would be easy to think that all cleaning cloths are the same, but this is not always true. From both a quality and sustainability point of view, MEWA wipes stand out from the crowd. With our tried-and-tested reusable industrial cleaning cloth system, it’s not surprising we’ve been the world market leader since 2011 and are now used by around 190,000 companies in 21 countries.

The best raw materials and manufacturing

From grease, paint and solvent removal to lint-free polishing, Mewa industrial wipes have long been designed to ensure high-quality performance across a wide range of industries. This is due to factors such as the choice of material and the way it is woven.

High-quality cotton, sourced ethically from around the world, make the MEWATEX range, creating a special structure that is tightly woven to maximise absorbency. The cotton delivers good abrasion and scuff resistance and has smooth, finer fibres that have a more pleasant touch - no scratching - and therefore nicer to use.

The secret behind our wipes is the quality of yarn used which determines their polishing and absorbency. The fineness, strength and evenness of the yarn is checked and only when all tests have been passed can the yarn bobbins be processed on our weaving machines at our state of the art weaving mill in Immenhausen. Five new cloths are created every second, that’s around 105 million pieces per year.

The result of such attention to detail is cleaning wipes that are highly absorbent (able to absorb 250% of their own weight), tear-resistant, durable and dimensionally stable.

MEWATEX – a robust, all-purpose wipe ideal for automotive and metal industries. It is hard-wearing, abrasion-resistant and absorbs all oil, paint, solvents and grease. At the same time, it’s ideal for residue-free wet cleaning of smooth surfaces.

MEWATEX PLUS – one of our most absorbent cotton cleaning wipes and also one of the gentlest for the most delicate of surfaces.

MEWATEX ULTRA – very strong and very gentle, removing even the coarsest dirt from sensitive surfaces. It has turbo-powered absorbency and is largely lint-free due to its tight weave, making it ideal for where virtually dust-free surfaces are required.

The highest level of testing

At MEWA our finished wipes must pass around 30 yarn and cloth tests, in addition to those required by DIN 61651*, before they are sent to our customers. This is a unique level of testing in the industry.

The tests are designed to check size and weight, tear resistance, absorbency and abrasion. Only once these questions have been satisfied, can we say with confidence that the cleaning wipes supplied to our customers are fit for purpose and meet our own standards.

*DIN 61651 – A foreign standard for machinery cleaning cloths published by the German Institute for Standardisation (Deutsches Institut für Normung)

Quality control – time and time again

Our soiled wipes are washed for at least 15 minutes at washing temperatures of 90oC, longer than the time recommended by the Robert Koch Institute (RKI)* which defines a holding time of 10 minutes at 90oC for thermal disinfection.

When they have been washed and dried, they go through multiple quality checks to ensure they are good enough to be recirculated. Our staff carry out a visual inspection of each and every wipe looking for soiling, tears or wear. Precise scales weigh the wipes; those that are too heavy mean they contain stubborn dirt and are rewashed; wipes that are too light suggest they are worn and these are removed from circulation. All wipes are then further examined for metal residues using a metal detector.

*The RKI is the German government’s central scientific institution and one of the most important bodies for the safeguarding of public health.

End to end sustainability

We place a priority on minimising waste and as a result, Mewa industrial wipes are a cost effective and sustainable alternative to single-use products such as paper wipes. As well as being able to reuse a Mewa wipe up to 50 times, we estimate that each year, the use of our wipes and mats by our customers reduces the significant amounts of dangerous industrial waste being created.

Tests have also shown that to clean up an equal amount of liquid, you will use 3-5 times more disposable wipes than Mewa wipes.

Added to which, with innovative technologies we ensure maximum cleanliness with minimal water, detergent and energy consumption. Thermal energy from recovered oil and fat content in our wipes cover up to 80 % of our washing and drying energy requirements; our heat recovery process saves around 7 million litres of heating oil a year. Our water processing methods means our water consumption is 50% lower compared to a conventional process.

You can see now why Mewa wipes are so special and exceptionally good at what they do. That’s why 2.8 million people use a Mewa industrial wipe every day in their workplace.

But don’t just take our word for it.
